Puerto Ricans are Not Second Class Citizens

On September 18th, Hurricane Fiona hit Puerto Rico leaving the island catastrophically damaged. According to FEMA, 1.18 million residents don't have electricity. This is about 80% of the island. Luma energyis said to restore energy within the next couple of days.

Puerto Rico is United States Territory, but that seems to hold no weight with the lack of urgency in federal funding and supplies being transported to the island.

How is it that the mainstream media and POTUS can be more concerned with the passing of Queen Elizabeth than the passing of four U.S. citizens? Puerto Ricans not being on the mainland should not have subjected them to the neglect they face in times of crisis. There are without a doubt federal funding gaps.

It seems as if Puerto Ricans are just worth having paper towels thrown at us as previous President of the United States, Donald Trump, demonstrated in 2017 when Hurricane Maria struck the Island.

5 years later, the Island was still recovering from damages brought by Maria just to have the poorly built infrastructures be torn down by Fiona. The systems put in place in 2017 were not sufficiently fixed. So many homes are underwater and residents displaced because the island was not prepared.

Our brothers and sisters of Puerto Rico are suffering.

Project Hope

Whenever a catastrophe such as Hurricane Fiona takes place it can be overwhelming with the amount of social media posts on how you can take action and lists of hundreds of thousands organizations to donate from. And even when you come down to an organization to donate to, you still have doubts about whether the money you are donating will actually be those in need.

This can be extra pressure when it's for a cause that affects your homeland and family. This is how I felt about Hurricane Fiona. If you are stressed about donating to the right place then that means you have a good heart! Pray and ask God to guide you into the right hands in which you can help in community service. Remember if you donate to an organization, it doesn't mean you have to become an ambassador for them.

I am blessed to have found Project Hope and I look forward to learning more about their organization and God Willing. One day, I'll be able to be on the ground with those healthcare workers and volunteer for those in need! You will find the right organization of community service leaders, but the only way to find that is to just get started and educate yourself!

Project Hope is a global health and humanitarian relief organization with over 62 years of work. They currently have emergency response teams in both Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic. When you donate money, it is used to buy and transport water, sanitation, medical supplies, and hygeine products to Puerto Rico.
